The 3 Stages Of Positive Dog Training

Any age of dog can learn something new. Some learn quicker than others and all have to be motivated.

Teaching a dog anything whatsoever should be based primarily on positive dog training strategies. Motivate, reward and reinforce is a method that will supply the best dog training results.

Choose a behaviour or trick that you would like to encourage your dog to carry out. The following process will work for anything within reason that you want to teach your dog to do.

To provide an example I'm going to use the choice of teaching the dog to bark on command.

This process can be carried out with a clicker or a praise word to identify the mandatory behavior.

Inspire

Show your dog the reward that he can earn if he offers the behaviour. He hasn't any concept what you expect from him and the trick of positive dog training is to allow him work it out for himself.

With barking you may need to build the dogs frustration a little so use quite a high worth reward, something he actually likes.

Reward

Then by keeping the reward in sight simply ignore everything the dog does apart from the behaviour. Don't expect him to supply the particular behaviour straightaway, remember he needs to work it out. As soon as he offers something that can lead to the desired behavior pinpoint it with a clicker or praise word then offer the reward.

Whilst waiting for a dog to bark I'll reward anything that may be a prelude to the bark. A small whine at the beginning is fine. The tiniest sound is something to build on.

Reinforce

Whenever you provide a tiny reward you are building a chain that will lead to the final and desired behavior. The dog is learning steadily towards a final result. The best thing about positive dog training is the dog working out which behaviour gives a reward, learning at its most efficient.

Reinforcement of the smallest sound will inspire the dog to offer more with his whine. Eventually with careful reinforcement this whine will increase and become a bark.
